Echoes from the Past

[Challenge win: Winner at A Bit More Time To Craft challenge]

It’s finally 2021, and I hope we have a good year ahead of us. I, for one, am delighted and honored to start the year in the Designer Spotlight for January on Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge! It’s going to be an exciting 4 weeks ahead, where I get to make art with a Design Team that has always inspired me. 🙂

This week, the challenge is: Use a New/Unused Product

The Design Team is also showcasing Brutus Monroe products this week, which you can choose to use in your projects.

For my project, I made an art journal spread. I’d bought a stencil recently, and I’d not had an opportunity to use it in my spreads yet, so what better time than now! 🙂

I spread some modeling paste over the background through the aforementioned stencil. Once this dried, I applied white gesso over it, and let it dry. I added some color on and around the stenciled area using acrylics, and spritzed some water to help the paint spread. After the paint had dried, I added some (pencil-based) watercolor strokes at the edges of the stenciled squares to highlight them a bit more.

I wanted the keep the focus on the stenciled area, so I chose to keep the rest of the background uncluttered. I used dye inks to very lightly stamp various patterns and letters all over the background. Finally, I added dotted marks using a light-colored Copic marker, and then some light watercolor splatters.

For the foreground elements, I cut patterned paper into rectangles, and applied a heavy vignette using watercolor pencils (and water, of course.) I then stamped a quote on a different piece of paper using dye inks, fussy cut rectangles around the words, and added a vignette to these as well.

I adhered all of these pieces onto the background, and finished the spread by adding a few buttons over the larger patterned paper. Ta da!
