[Challenge win: Winner at CrafTangles challenge]
It’s Monday, which means a new Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge! I’m still as excited and honored as I was last week to be in the Designer Spotlight for this month, and to create with inspiring artists.
This week, the challenge is: Shake It Up, which means all kinds of shaker projects!
This project was definitely a challenge for me, since I usually associate shakers with cards. I’m not much into making cards, so making a shaker project was a pretty new and novel experience! 🙂
For my project, I made a shaker tag with bubble tea (boba tea) as the focal element.
I used packaging cardboard for the tag base, to which I affixed an eyelet. I applied white heavy gesso over the tag, and dabbed acrylic paints of various colors. Every time I added a color, I spritzed water over it, and let it dry before applying the next color.

After the acrylic colors dried, I unevenly outlined the tag’s edges with watercolors for a vignette. And while I waited for the acrylics to dry, I unwrapped a used tea bag, and applied an ombré reddish-brown-based acrylics gradient onto it for the ‘tea’. I crumpled the tea bag for additional texture.
I made coffee cup shaped die cuts from card stock, and fussy-cut the tea bag and an acetate sheet to conform to the die cut shapes.

After all this, I actually ended up redoing the background with even brighter colors since the ‘tea’ was not very distinguishable from the background. I then did a lot of stamping using dye inks with various stamps, and added acrylics splatters over the background.
I assembled the shaker component with the tea-bag as bottom-most layer, and sequins and seed beads inside. For the quote, I used alphabet die cuts with metallic acrylics painted over them, and a sentiment stamp with archival ink. That completed my project, ta da!

So that was my project. Do head on over to Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge and feast your eyes on more shaker inspirations from the Design Team, create your project, and join the challenge!
The design team, as always, will choose a selection of their entries to put in the spotlight. What’s more, a randomly selected winner will get a $25 voucher to shop at the Simon Says Stamp Store!
Many thanks to the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Design Team for their kind invitation to feature in the Designer Spotlight this month!

Hello lovely! I usually associate shakers with cards as well. They are fun to make but also kind of ephemera. Honestly, I prefer an old tea bag for my works… love what you did with your crumpled tea bag and die cut coffee cup! ❤️

Thank you so much, Chana! The tea bag went in there since I had the idea while sipping tea. 😉
