Flying Starts With a Dream

Here’s a recent art journal spread of mine –

Flying Starts With a Dream - Art journal by Anita

I started the background of the spread with some gel printing–I used my gel plate for some plain coloring initially, then added in a stencil and white acrylic paint for a leafy gel-printed pattern.

Over this, I used stamps–both bought and one that I hand-carved–with dye inks to add some distressed interest.

I reinforced the edges of some of the white leafy areas with a Posca marker, then made scribbly outlines with a black fineliner. I used watercolor pencils with a water brush pen to darken the edges.

For the focal insects, I used stamps with dye ink on a different piece of paper, which I fussy cut and adhered to the background, then outlined with black fineliner.

I repeated the steps with a printed quote–I fussy cut it, pasted it onto the background, and outlined it with black fineliner. I then added some shading to the quote with a watercolor pencil and a water brush pen.

Finally, I added some white acrylic splatters, which I reinforced with an oil-based marker. Ta da!

  1. Oh yes and truth be told I’ve dreamt of flying like Peter Pan, flying over city lights. Yet I am not much for flying in a plane. Thanks for the reminder of my dreams.
