It’s Inspiration Station time again, and my sis and I are back with our interpretations of a theme that we choose! It was my sister’s turn to come up with a theme, and she suggested non-paper focal and / or abstract. I wanted to incorporate both, but it didn’t pan out the way I intended, so my project just uses non-paper focal elements.

I made covers for my current A6 art journal, over which I incorporated mixed media in a more flat and unlayered format than what is usually expected in a mixed media assemblage project.

I started out by cutting up a cereal box into front and back covers, and adhered patterned paper on their ‘outside’ surfaces. I then added some quick swipes of acrylic paints with a brayer on a paper sheet, which I cut up and adhered on the inside surfaces of the covers. This gave them a neat finish.

I then added more patterns to the papers by using acrylics with stencils, acrylics with stamps, and dye inks with stamps. I also added marks with a Posca marker and a fineliner. I kept the back cover simple by using an insect stamp with dye inks.

For the front cover, I used scraps from previous projects, unwanted plastic stuff that arrived with other stuff I’d ordered, and new polymer clay components that I baked for this project. I applied gesso to all components, painted metallic acrylics on them, and applied metallic wax on them at places.

I used a flat(ish) composition with minimal layering, using soft gloss gel to adhere the components in their places. I then added art stones – also using soft gloss gel – and used acrylics over them with some spritzing of water. I then diecut some leaves and buds, applied metallic acrylics on them, and added them to the composition.

I then handwrote an ‘Arty’ label over a metallic-acrylics-painted paper card, and adhered it over the elements as well. That completes my art journal covers, ta da!

I’ll secure the mixed media side with clear plastic, and use the covers whenever I stitch my art journal pages together into an actual journal.
