I made an art journal spread recently, starting on it when I was feeling really frustrated, working on it intermittently, and ending it when I felt especially grateful to my near & dear ones for being there for me.
I started the page with some scribble journaling, which I planned to cover up. I pasted some scrap paper onto this for some texture. I obviously didn’t have a plan for the spread, so I just played with this and that, and ended up with quite a few layers. All of them were kinda dark – due to my mood, I guess?
For the background, I used mostly acrylics and stencils. I’m beginning to get the hang of the paint wiping technique, and the results turn out bad only a few times these days. 😉 I then used stamps with dye inks for some subtle additional texture of rectangles and scribbles.
For the focal image, I stamped some contour figures – I used a mask to have the central figure stand ‘in front of’ the other two figures. I then used more stamping to add some textures to their apparel. I fussy cut this ensemble and pasted it onto my spread. I then used watercolors, watercolor pencils, and multiliners to fill out and add more details of my choice to the figures.
I then used watercolor pencils to paint a circle in brighter colors, reinforcing it with some scribbled multiliner circles.
I used a cling foam stamp to print the large ‘S‘, and outlined it with a marker. I then used a fineliner and a marker to write the rest of the characters. Some marks, and the spread was complete. Ta da!
Hope you are safe, feel supported, and stay strong.
